How It Works

Flesch Reading Ease

The Flesch Reading Ease formula produces a score between 0 and 100. Higher scores indicate text that is easier to read. The formula is:

206.835 - 1.015 × (words / sentences) - 84.6 × (syllables / words)

  • 90–100: Very Easy — 5th grade level, easily understood by an 11-year-old
  • 80–89: Easy — 6th grade, conversational English
  • 70–79: Fairly Easy — 7th grade
  • 60–69: Standard — 8th–9th grade, understood by 13–15 year olds
  • 50–59: Fairly Difficult — 10th–12th grade
  • 30–49: Difficult — College level
  • 0–29: Very Difficult — College graduate level, academic papers
Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level

This formula converts the reading ease to a U.S. school grade level. A score of 8.0 means an eighth grader can understand the text.

0.39 × (words / sentences) + 11.8 × (syllables / words) - 15.59

Other Readability Metrics
  • Gunning Fog Index: Estimates years of formal education needed. Uses the percentage of complex words (3+ syllables).
  • Coleman-Liau Index: Uses character counts instead of syllables, making it more reliable for automated analysis.
  • Automated Readability Index (ARI): Also character-based, designed for real-time automated assessment.
Syllable Counting

Syllables are estimated using English language heuristics: counting vowel groups while accounting for silent-e endings, common suffixes (-le, -ed), and diphthongs. While not perfect for every word, the estimation is accurate enough for readability scoring.

Why Readability Matters
  • Accessibility: Content written at lower reading levels reaches more people, including non-native speakers and those with reading difficulties
  • Engagement: Readers are more likely to finish and understand clearly-written content
  • SEO: Search engines favor content that is accessible and easy to read
  • Legal & Medical: Plain language requirements exist for government, healthcare, and financial documents
